Overview

When Zach Thomas took over management and ownership of an underperforming Chick-fil-A in 2008, he had no idea what he was in for. Having had a successful career as an Infantry Captain and Army Ranger prior to his endeavor into food service, he felt very confident in his ability to lead a successful turnaround. The restaurant was in the midst of two years of flat to declining sales, and an employee retention rate below 25%. Team morale was low with many employees expressing that they did not feel like they, or their work, had an impact on the bottom line. Zach found himself working 6 days a week just to keep day-to-day operations afloat and zero time to address the bigger issues affecting the restaurant.

C7 Solution

Capacity7 partnered with Zach over the course of two years. We focused on three key areas: leadership development, team meetings, and ongoing training. Through our assessment phase we quickly discovered that Zach’s default leadership style needed to adapt. His employees did not take well to the command and control method he learned in the military. Instead, Zach needed to learn a new style of leadership that would help his employees and his business thrive. He met with C7 for weekly leadership coaching offsites where he zeroed in on a leadership style “leading with latitude” that motivated his employees by providing high levels of autonomy. Weekly team sessions were held to encourage the same freedom-based approach to leadership and to create job descriptions and expectations for performance reviews and career-pathing – all created by employees for employees.

The combined approach of leadership coaching and team development worked fantastically well. Zach has left behind regimented, militaristic leadership for a broader approach that empowers team members with clear expectations and ample resources to get the job done. They invest millions of dollars each year into product innovation, but their Global Design and Innovation Teams found themselves getting stuck working on incremental product improvements rather than breakthrough, industry-changing ideas. They needed an outside perspective on their creative process to jumpstart change.

Capacity7 partnered with Coke’s Global Design & Innovation Team over the course of 5 years to identify the challenges with their current process and team dynamics, and implement recommended solutions. We facilitated sessions at regular intervals where we gave a variety of assessments aimed at uncovering team strengths and areas for improvement. Team Novo Nordisk is an all-diabetes cycling team based in Atlanta, Georgia. With 6 years of success under their belt, they set the goal of competing in the Tour de France by 2021. President Phil Southerland knew they needed to set ambitious milestones to achieve their goal, starting with growing the team to three times the current size. They also needed to double their sponsorships and create a clear business strategy to pull it all together.

We started with a strategy to attract new talent including a VP of Compliance/Chief People Officer. Leadership coaching sessions aided the team in creating a Team Manifesto and Playbook that clearly conveyed their mission and the expectations for the team to reach the Tour de France. LabeLive is a media and events company based in Franklin, Tennessee. They collaborate with artists and event planners to create the best live experience tailored to their specific audience. With more work than their small team knew what to do with, they desperately needed to define the foundational goals for their organization and create a culture philosophy and Culture Book to get new and existing team members on the same page.

We served as interim Chief People Officer until they were able to train internal support, and then transitioned to an advisory role.
